Vauxhall Swappage moves the game on still further from the Government-backed scrappage scheme, according to Murketts, with at least £3,000 carved off the price of all new Astras, Astra Sport Hatches and most new Corsa models, in exchange for any roadworthy car they own which is at least seven years old.

Nor is Murketts imposing any upper age limit on the cars that customers trade in. Better still, unlike the current scrappage scheme, even buyers who have a ten year old car (or older) to swap only need to have owned it for 90 days and Murketts will also allow a husband/wife to trade in their partner's car, as long as they live at the same address.

That means that any seven-year-old UK-registered car with insurance, road tax and MoT - no matter what its value or condition - can be used as currency to reduce the cost of the 2010 Corsa 1.0 Energy 3-dr to just £8,925 and the recently-launched Astra 5-dr to as little as £12,995 for the Exclusiv 1.4 model, confirmed the dealership.

Even bigger savings can be made by swapping your old car for the latest Astra Sport Hatch Sport 1.4, with its standard VXR styling pack, sports suspension and air conditioning. Swappage brings the cost of this model down by a remarkable £3,885 to just £12,995.

Government extend the Scrappage Programme until 31st March 2010

The Government has now extended its scrappage scheme to include cars registered before 29th Febuary 2000, which means that V reg plates are now included for the £2,000 trade in funding.

This has also been extended to vans which are 8 years and older, which includes anything that was registered before 29th Febuary 2002

The Government's ‘scrappage' scheme

The vehicle discount or ‘scrappage' scheme is a voluntary scheme for motor dealers. If a dealer joins they'll give you £2,000 off a new vehicle provided that you let them scrap your old one. The scheme will run from mid May 2009 to March 2010, depending on whether its fixed budget runs out sooner.

How to take advantage of the vehicle discount scheme
Murketts is a member of this scheme and the first thing we do is to check that your ‘old' vehicle and the new vehicle you want to buy both meet the rules of the scheme. When the sale is agreed, we will sort out the paperwork and arrange for your vehicle to be scrapped. The discount is deducted from the price you pay for your new vehicle and will be shown on your invoice when you take delivery of your new vehicle.

The rules of the vehicle discount scheme
The vehicle you trade in and the new vehicle you want to buy must meet certain conditions in order for you to qualify for the discount.

Your vehicle
The vehicle you are trading in must:

•· be a car or small van weighing up to 3,500 kilograms

•· be registered in the United Kingdom on or before 29th Febuary 2000

•· be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)or Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) in your name

•· have been registered to you continuously for 12 calendar months before the order date of the new vehicle

•· have a UK address on the registration certificate (V5C)

•· have a current MoT test certificate before date of order for the new vehicle (or within 14 days of expiry at the time of order)

•· have a current tax disc when the order for the new vehicle is placed (or within 14 days of expiry at the time of order)

•· be insured when the order for the new vehicle is placed

The new vehicle
The new vehicle you want to buy must be:

a car or small van weighing up to 3,500 kg
first registered in the UK on or after mid May 2009
declared new at first registration in the UK with no former keepers

When trading in your old vehicle for a new vehicle the registered keeper for both vehicles must be the same.
