*** All New Astra ***
At Murketts, we simply can't wait for the sensational new Vauxhall Astra to arrive.
New Astra's interior marks a major shift up-market and continues a design evolution that started five years ago with the current Astra, followed by a further step-change last year with the launch of the Insignia. The Astra interior employs the recurring ‘wing-and-blade' motifs first introduced in the Insignia and which are now used in a fresh and innovative way. The ‘blade' theme manifests itself in the gooseneck shape of the door grab handles and the trim for the gearshift moulding and steering wheel.
Space and depth
The feeling of space and depth in the cabin stems from a centre panel mounted at a shallow 30-degree angle which sweeps down from the top of the instrument panel to the centre console, creating a flowing surface that incorporates the gearshift. Like the Insignia, the Astra's instrumentation and gauges are ringed with chrome, with the speedometer and tachometer pods angled inwards towards the driver.
Much emphasis has gone into the design and engineering of the Astra's seats, which now have industry-leading levels of adjustment. Their height can be raised by up to 65mm while their fore and aft range extends to 280mm, allowing all drivers and passengers to find their ideal seating position. In addition, the Ergonomic Sports Seats (standard in all Elite models) have improved tilt adjustment, four-way power lumbar support, superior side support and supporting foam pads.
Storage and packaging
Do people actually put gloves in their glove boxes? This questions was put to potential customers by Vauxhall's designers as they researched what people actually kept in their cars, and where. The resulting feedback enabled the design team to compile a list of the 20 most common items customers stored in the cars: pens, coins, flashlight, road atlas, parking disc, sunglasses, a wallet, paper tissues, a mobile phone, CDs, MP3 players, cups, magazines, newspapers, fruit, a first aid kit, a jacket, a 1.5/1.0/0.5-litre drinks bottle. And, of course, gloves.
Director Nigel Murkett says: "It was important for Vauxhall's design team not only to find places for these items, but for the new Astra's interior to also look great and maintain high quality standards throughout the cabin."
Materials & quality
The quality of the materials used in the new Astra can be seen in areas like the grained surfaces, the textured panels, the chrome trim elements and the feel and operation of the buttons and switches. In addition, all the Astra's main surfaces are textured with upscale materials and top grains to give a strong, premium feel. "Vauxhall's goal was to make the perceived quality of the interior of the next generation Astra as great as that of the Vauxhall Insignia," adds Nigel. "This is in line with Vauxhall's mission to bring innovations and quality to the compact class."
Available in the Showroom from 11th December 2009

New Insignia is best VXR yet
Packing 325 horsepower, a sophisticated four-wheel drive chassis and a sub-6 second 0-60 time, Vauxhall's new Insignia VXR is taking the mid-size performance saloon market by storm when with a level of dynamic performance which looks certain to raise the bar in its class.
Based on the successful 2009 International Car of the Year and available in hatchback, saloon and Sports Tourer body styles, the high-performance Insignia is the first VXR model to adopt 4x4 technology, using a bespoke chassis developed at the gruelling Nürburgring race circuit in Germany.
Unique suspension designPerformance features include ‘HiPerStrut' (High Performance Strut) front suspension, Adaptive 4x4 with electronic Limited Slip Differential (eLSD) and a ten mm reduction in ride height over the Insignia SRi. The HiPerStrut system is unique to the VXR and serves to reduce torque-steer while maintaining negative camber during cornering, thereby improving grip levels in wet and dry conditions.Complementing these features are standard 19-inch alloy wheels (20-inch lightweight forged alloys are a cost option) with bespoke tyres, revised bushing and damper settings on both axles, and Brembo brakes with colour-keyed callipers and vented/cross-drilled discs. The sporting theme continues inside, with Recaro front seats, a new VXR steering wheel, VXR gear knob and unique mouldings come as standard along with different instrument graphics, VXR sill plates and a black headlining.
Performance at its heartAt the heart of the Insignia VXR is Vauxhall's advanced 2.8-litre V6 Turbo ECOTEC engine, with its micro-alloy forged steel crank, classic 60-degree cylinder angle and die-cast alloy oil sump - all features found in many a race engine. Producing 325PS (65PS up on the Elite V6), the engine uses a single, twin-scroll turbocharger and variable valve control for quick throttle response, and accelerates from 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds, achieving an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
All VXRs are available in Arden Blue, Power Red, Carbon Flash Black, Silver Lake, Olympic White and Technical Grey.
